Former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo, who officially retired in February, has begun to look back on the unforgettable battles and golden years of his career. From 2007 to 2022, he played 546 official matches for Real Madrid, scoring 38 goals and delivering 104 assists. During that time, he lifted six La Liga titles and five UEFA Champions League trophies, becoming one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca, Marcelo revisited some of the most emotional chapters of his twenty-year career, explaining how the journey shaped him both as an athlete and as a person.
Entering a Locker Room Full of Legends
Marcelo still vividly remembers his early days at Real Madrid. When he arrived as a young prospect, he walked into a locker room filled with players he had admired on television. Raúl, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Míchel Salgado, Iker Casillas, Guti, and Roberto Carlos — all football icons with global reputations.
“For me it was like living inside a dream,” he said. “These were the players I used to watch on TV, and suddenly I was sharing the locker room with them. They helped me from the very beginning and made my adaptation easier than I ever expected.”
He also spoke fondly about Cristiano Ronaldo: “We made our debuts in the same match, and from day one he showed unbelievable quality. Playing alongside someone like him was a privilege.”

The Brazilian also mentioned how his own children often watch Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo highlights at home. “They always ask me, ‘Were they really that good?’ And I tell them: watch the videos and judge for yourselves.”
